Pathways for PCTO Transversal Skills

NEW! Attached are the new Guidelines

PCTO: definition, purpose, orientation value of the experience

The Pathways for Transversal Skills and Orientation or more simply PCTO (new denomination of the School-Work Alternation) are configured as an innovative teaching method, which through practical experience, and thanks to projects in line with the study plan, help students: to consolidate the knowledge acquired at school, to test their aptitudes in the field or in "real" contexts, to enrich their training and to guide their future study path.

PCTOs are mandatory for all students in the last three years of high school and are one of the most significant innovations of Law 107 of 2015 (better known as "The Good School"). In high schools - such as Galilei - this obligation is equal to 90 hours and includes various activities that make up the individual student's PCTO, such as, for example: conferences organized by the school, innovative curricula, afternoon workshops, internships at the University, visits to companies or research institutions, etc. Alongside these activities, the School offers all students the opportunity to take part in some experiences that aim to put them in contact with the world of work, to help them orientate their future choices and put into practice what they learned at school.

In all these experiences the students are accompanied by a "school tutor" (a teacher) and an "external tutor", who have the task of planning and evaluating the path followed by the student.

Starting from the 2015/16 school year, the Galilei High School has activated numerous PCTO courses on the basis of special agreements stipulated with host structures falling within the typologies indicated in article 1, paragraph 34 of law 107/2015: Companies and respective representative associations; Public and private bodies, including those of the third sector; Museums and other public and private institutions operating in the sectors of heritage and cultural, artistic and musical activities; Organizations that carry out activities related to the environmental heritage; Sports promotion bodies recognized by CONI.

Particular attention was paid to the activation of scientific-experimental courses, co-designed with the University of Trieste, with the University of Udine and with research institutions present in the area (Elettra Sincrotrone, OGS, SISSA, Unione Meteorologica del FVG), and related to the health area (ASUITs).

Normally, PCTO experiences involve students in the third and fourth year of the course, while in the fifth year orientation activities are proposed, to facilitate an informed choice of the future study path and to promote knowledge of employment opportunities and outlets (open doors at UniTS, trade fair, visits to companies, administration of self-assessment tests).

For students who join the high-level student-athlete educational experimentation, the PCTO activities include sports commitments, based on a personalized training project shared between the school and the institution, federation, club or sports association recognized by CONI that follows the student's athletic path,   with the methods set out in points 1 and 3 of the "Interpretative Clarifications" provided by the MIUR with note prot.n.3355 of 28 March 2017.

Students engaged in PCTOs receive general training in the field of health and safety protection in the workplace in accordance with article 37, paragraph 1, letter a), of legislative decree 9 April 2008, n. 81, and subsequent amendments, as governed by the agreement provided for by article 37, paragraph 2, of the same legislative decree. This training takes place online, is certified and recognized in all respects and is integrated with face-to-face training for medium risk and with any specific training that students receive upon entering the host structure.

Students and subjects with parental responsibility receive extensive and detailed information on the projects and their educational and training purposes, as well as on the personalized training path, by signing the training agreement, a document which sets out the expected skills and the obligations deriving from the activity in the work context.

Students are supported in the alternation activity by an internal tutor designated by the school institution and by a tutor of the host structure designated by the host structure, whose names and contacts are provided in the training agreement.

The courses end with the certification and joint evaluation of the activity carried out by the student by the internal tutor and the external tutor, through the compilation of a specific document, which constitutes a useful element for the Class Council for the periodic and final evaluations of the student, for the attribution of the school credit and for the purposes of admission to the state exams.

As required by current legislation, in the context of the final interview of the state exam, the student will have to present, through a short report and/or a multimedia document, the experiences carried out in the context of the paths for transversal skills and orientation (PCTO). In the report and/or thesis, the student, in addition to illustrating the nature and characteristics of the activities carried out and correlating them to the specific and transversal skills acquired, will propose to the Commission a reflection on the significance and impact of these activities on post-diploma study and/or work opportunities.

school-work alternation School-Work Alternation

School-work alternation is one of the most significant innovations of law 107 of 2015 (La Buona Scuola), which made it compulsory for all students in the last three years of high school, including high schools. It is an innovative teaching method, which through practical experience helps consolidate the knowledge acquired at school and test the aptitudes of students in the field, enriching their education and directing their study path and, in the future, their work, thanks to projects in line with their study plan.

Starting from the 2015/16 school year, Liceo Galilei has activated numerous alternation courses on the basis, in accordance with the provisions of article 1, paragraph 2, of Legislative Decree 77/2005, of special agreements stipulated with host structures falling within the typologies indicated in article 1, paragraph 34 of law 107/2015:

- Companies and respective representative associations;

- Public and private entities, including those of the third sector;

- Museums and other public and private institutions operating in the sectors of heritage and cultural, artistic and musical activities;

- Entities that carry out activities related to the environmental heritage;

- Sports promotion organizations recognized by CONI.

Particular attention was paid to the activation of scientific-experimental courses, co-designed with the University of Trieste and with research institutions present in the area (Elettra Sincrotrone, OGS, SISSA, Unione Meteorologica del FVG), and inherent to the health area (ASUITs).

The internships involve students in the third and fourth year of the course and are preferably carried out in periods of suspension of teaching, while in the fifth year orientation activities are offered, to facilitate an informed choice of the future study path and to promote knowledge of employment opportunities and outlets (open doors at UniTS, trade fair, visits to companies, administration of self-assessment tests).

For students who adhere to the high-level student-athlete educational experimentation (DM 279 10/04/2018), the school-work alternation activities include sports commitments, on the basis of a personalized training project shared between the school and the institution, federation, company or sports association recognized by CONI which follows the student's athletic path, with the methods set out in points 1 and 3 of the "Interpretative Clarifications" provided by the MIUR with note prot.n.3355 of the March 28, 2017.

Students engaged in alternating courses receive general training in the field of health and safety protection in the workplace pursuant to article 37, paragraph 1, letter a), of the

legislative decree 9 April 2008, n. 81, and subsequent amendments, as governed by the agreement provided for by article 37, paragraph 2, of the same legislative decree. This training takes place online via the ministerial school-to-work alternation platform, is certified and recognized in all respects and is integrated, if necessary, with the specific training that students receive upon entering the host facility.

The courses end with the certification and joint evaluation of the activity carried out by the student by the internal tutor and the external tutor, by filling in a specific document, which constitutes for the Board of

class useful element for the periodic and final assessments of the student, for the attribution of the school credit and for the purposes of admission to the state exams.

Students will have the right to express an assessment at the end of the course on the effectiveness and coherence of the alternation course carried out with respect to their field of study using a specially prepared questionnaire.
